Toyota Tacoma Leveling Kit Guide: Lift Heights, Fitment, and What to Expect

The Toyota Tacoma is one of the best-selling mid-size trucks in America, and it's one of the most popular platforms for leveling kits. Tacoma owners are serious about their trucks — they want more capability, bigger tires, and a more aggressive look. A leveling kit can provide additional tire clearance and a more aggressive stance.

DOES THE TACOMA RAKE FROM THE FACTORY?

Yes. The Tacoma comes from the factory with a slight nose-down rake — typically around 1 to 1.5 inches, depending on the year, trim, and suspension package. A leveling kit helps correct this for a flat, purposeful stance.

TACOMA FRONT SUSPENSION: COILOVER

Most 4WD Tacomas use a double-wishbone front suspension with a coilover shock assembly. Leveling options include: Strut spacer / topper spacer — sits on top of the factory coilover; offers an affordable way to increase front ride height while retaining the factory spring and shock. Adjustable aftermarket coilovers — allow ride height adjustment on compatible systems. MotoFab's Tacoma leveling kits use a precision-machined spacer approach for a clean, reliable installation.

LIFT HEIGHTS FOR THE TACOMA

1.5" leveling kit — helps correct the factory rake with relatively modest suspension geometry changes. 2" leveling kit — a popular choice for Tacoma owners looking for additional tire clearance and a more level stance. 2.5"–3" leveling kit — provides a more aggressive stance but increases suspension angles and may require additional components, such as aftermarket upper control arms, depending on the application.

IMPORTANT NOTE ON CV AXLE ANGLE

The Tacoma's CV axle angles change when front ride height is increased. Excessive lift can contribute to accelerated CV joint wear, vibration, and reduced suspension travel. Aftermarket upper control arms can help address alignment and ball joint operating angles, but they do not correct CV axle angles. Always follow the recommended lift range for your specific Tacoma generation and suspension configuration.

TIRE SIZES FOR A LEVELED TACOMA

Common factory tire sizes on earlier Tacomas include 265/70R16 and 265/65R17, although sizes vary by generation and trim. With a leveling kit: 1.5"–2" level — sizes such as 265/75R16 or 265/70R17 (approximately 32") may fit many configurations. 2.5" level — larger tires such as 285/75R16 (approximately 33") may be possible on certain builds, but often require wheel offset considerations and additional clearance modifications. The Tacoma's wheel wells can be tighter than those of a full-size truck, so larger tires may require trimming around the mud flaps, inner fenders, or other areas. Always verify fitment before purchasing.

2ND GEN (2005–2015) VS. 3RD GEN (2016–2023) TACOMA

Both generations use similar independent front suspension designs with coilover assemblies, but their components and fitment requirements are not necessarily interchangeable. 2nd gen: An established platform with a wide range of aftermarket suspension options. 3rd gen: Updated suspension geometry and application-specific components. The 4th-generation Tacoma, introduced for 2024, features additional suspension changes and requires kits specifically designed for that generation. MotoFab offers Tacoma-specific leveling kit options for select models and years.

AFTER INSTALLATION

Get an alignment after your Tacoma leveling kit installation. Tacoma alignments should include a caster check, since changes in front suspension height can affect caster, steering feel, and highway stability. Shop Toyota Tacoma leveling kits at motofablifts.com.
